Yesterday, we hit 30 weeks. That’s 3/4 done with pregnancy. That means: 8 weeks of strict bed rest 3 weeks of modified bed rest (what I like to call “house arrest”, since I could leave the bed/couch, but not really go anywhere or do anything) 12 ultrasounds so far (with at least 2 more scheduled) [...]

I have graduated. After 8 full weeks of bed rest, I now have “moving around the house” privileges. I still can’t really *do* much (lift things, stand for long periods of time, etc.), and I can’t go anywhere, but I can move! I celebrated last night by standing in the kitchen and making pumpkin chocolate chip [...]

Yesterday, at our weekly appointment with the maternal-fetal medicine doctor, we saw why exactly I’m on bed rest. He was measuring my cervix on the ultrasound, and noted that it looked even longer than last week. I asked how, exactly, that can be true, since it doesn’t really grow. He said, “well, it’s not true. Today was my weekly outing to the doctor’s. That’s right, in the past two weeks, I’ve left the house twice–both times to go to the dr. I don’t get out much. But good news! My cervix has doubled in size in the past two weeks. The cerclage is working (in that the cervix is closed [...]

Today is Sprout’s 20th week of existence, which means 20 weeks down and 20 more to go (as long as Sprout doesn’t come out early, which is a distinct possibility at this point). Sprout is about the length of a banana from head to rump (6 1/2 inches) and 10 inches from head to heel [...]

So we’re trying to get into the swing of this new routine. Sara does all the cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, and playing personal maid to me, in addition to her full time job. Me, I get to move from the bed to the couch. Sara waited until I could get myself to the bathroom [...]

I was pretty sure Gus was going to be the biggest fan of bedrest. He was, afterall, elated when I stopped going off to work every day, and stayed home with him where he could sit on my lap and help type. But bedrest, I mean, that’s his dream-cuddling on the couch or bed with [...]
“The One Where Abby Becomes a Shut-In”

The past two days have felt like an eternity. Yesterday morning we had our 5-month appointment with the midwife as well as a follow-up ultrasound because Abby’s cervix measured 2.5cm long during last week’s ultrasound (2.5cm is much shorter than average for the 18th week of pregnancy). Yesterday’s ultrasound (at 19 weeks) showed Abby’s cervix [...]
